Mass schedules vary on certain feast days and holy days of obligation. Check the Weekly Bulletin for special service schedules.

Ash Wednesday

On Ash Wednesday, Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 am, 12:00 noon, 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm. Ashes, which are a tangible reminder of the Lenten emphasis on penitence, will be distributed at all the Masses.

Fridays of Lent

On Fridays during Lent, we will have Bread and Soup Supper at 6:00 pm, followed by the Stations of the Cross with Taize music at 7:30pm.

St. Anne is one of the largest parishes in the Oakland Diocese, but maintains a friendly, small-town atmosphere. St. Anne is located in Union City, California, a suburb of the San Francisco Bay Area. St. Anne was founded in 1860 and the original church was built in the old Alvarado District (as the area was known before its charter as Union City). Our new church was built in 1983.

Union City is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse communities in Northern California and St. Anne reflects this diversity. Families, friends, and visitors are welcome to celebrate in our Mass as well as participate in the many activities and parish organizations. Guest priests and missionaries are often invited to celebrate Mass. For further information please contact our Parish Office.

Catholic Youth Organization (CYO)

St. Anne sponsors a CYO program as one dimension of the total ministry to youth. Athletic programs can help young people toward imperishable crowns as well as perishable ones. A parish CYO program justifies its existence, the sacrifice, and expense it entails only if it makes better Christians of its participants.

In our CYO program, emphasis rests not on the number of games won or lost, but on the participants' attitude in victory or defeat. Learning how to lose is just as important as learning how to win. Learning how to win graciously is more important than winning itself.

Our program is designed to serve the needs of all our youth. It enables the gifted to excel, the less gifted to participate and improve. "Star" athletes and teams do not receive exclusive attention.

The principles of fair play and sportsmanship must govern every game. Dishonesty has no place in CYO competition. CYO competitors must not borrow from professional sports questionable techniques for winning at any cost.

Finally, St. Paul advises in I Cor. 9:24 — "run to win". In CYO athletics, all who compete can win, if they run to win the real prize: closer union with Jesus Christ.

Youth Ministry - Confirmation

The Confirmation preparation program at St. Anne’s is a two-year process, with the first year completed as a participant in the Saint Anne Youth Ministry program. Students may begin the enrollment process for Confirmation as early as spring of their freshman year, provided they have previously registered for Youth Ministry and attended the fall or spring retreat. The process begins with the enrollment interviews in May, and a decision is made at that time if you would like to enter the program. Those deciding on enrollment are given a candidate agreement that is returned with baptismal & sponsor information, along with a registration fee.

The immediate preparation for the sacrament begins in the fall. The Confirmation sessions meet twice a month on Sunday’s from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. There are 12 scheduled sessions, along with a weekend retreat, ministry projects, sponsor-candidate sessions, and the celebrations of different Rites.

The Confirmation Retreat takes place in December @ Mission Springs Christian Conference Center.

Saint Anne Youth Ministry

Saint Anne Youth Ministry is open to youth entering the ninth grade, or for those in high school who have not had youth ministry experience previously. Our purpose is to build a community of young people examining issues at the forefront of their minds & lives, to encourage growth socially, provide interaction through community service projects, and faithfully deepen the relationship with
God.

In April all the students are invited to register for the sacrament of Confirmation preparation program, however this is not a requirement of any student. In order to register for Confirmation, you must be registered for and have participated in the Saint Anne Youth Ministry meetings and one Youth Ministry retreat.

Weekly Meetings

During the school year the Youth Ministry group meets on Monday evenings in the parish hall. From 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. youth may arrive and have time to socialize and check out upcoming events. At 6:30 p.m. we begin our meeting and will finish with closing prayer by 8:30 p.m. There is a phone available if anyone needs to call locally for a ride home.

Retreats

In addition to Saint Anne gatherings, we offer Youth Ministry participants two weekend retreats a year, one in the winter and one in the spring. Students wishing to enter the Confirmation program must attend one of these two retreats prior to registration for Confirmation. There is a limit to 40 students per retreat.

Entry fee: $100.00 per person with other levels of sponsorship available.

You are cordially invited to participate in and support our Swing For St. Anne's 10th Annual Golf Tournament fund raiser on June 20, 2009, at the Skywest Golf Course, 8:00 AM shotgun start, followed by the awards dinner dance at St. Anne's Social Hall at 6:00 PM.

All proceeds will go to our much needed repairs and maintenance of St. Anne Church roof, doors and sidewalks. These urgent repairs will ensure the safety and beauty of St. Anne's facilities.

Youth Ministry - EMMAUS Peer Ministry

For over 20 years, Youth Ministry at St. Anne’s has focused on a peer ministry model to promote and foster leadership among youth. We use the example of the road to EMMAUS (Luke 24:13-35) as a model that we journey together, with the Lord, in our everyday lived experiences.

EMMAUS is an existing group of young people who have expressed an interest in serving the Church through the Youth Ministry program for one year. For example, a group might prepare youth liturgies and retreats. Other responsibilities include planning and leading workshops, icebreakers and prayer for youth ministry meetings & facilitating small group discussions.

The peer ministry group also takes on different projects throughout the year like the SOUPER Bowl project…a coat/glove/hat drive in November and a sock drive in the spring, along with our monthly stewardship collections for various charities.

The EMMAUS peer ministry group has an annual 3-day training retreat during the summer, and also meets monthly for enrichment and planning. Peer ministry is open to high school students’, sophomore and above, already confirmed. Applications are available in April.

EMMAUS Applications

EMMAUS Applications for the 2009-2010 are now available. Completed applications are due on Sunday, May 3, 2009. Candidates will be interviewed and chosen through the application and interview process.

EMMAUS Peer Ministry Retreat

The EMMAUS Peer Ministry Retreat will take place Friday to Sunday, June 26-28, 2009 at the Diocesan Youth Retreat Center in Lafayette.

Couples For Christ

Couples For Christ (CFC) is an international Catholic Christian Ministry that focuses on married couples through a seminar called the Christian Life Program (CLP). The program's emphasis is on husband and wife growing together in their Christian lives. It also focuses on the strengthening and the development of the Domestic Church, which is the family. Other programs that reach out to other members of the family - widows, singles, divorced, youth and children. We welcome everyone.

It was early in 1973 when Sister Felicia Sarati, CSJ, approached some people about the idea of forming a parish group for Filipinos. The idea was welcomed by the nucleus group of seven couples.

In the spring of 1973, a special Filipino Mass and pot luck was organized to launch the beginnings of the group. The response was overwhelming and the St. Anne Filipino Group was formed. We formulated our goals to have solidarity in purpose. It was this simple statement - "we exist to help the community with one and to extend that communal concern with those in our community of faith". We seek to identify the needs of the Filipinos in our area and respond to them.

Festival Raffle Tickets

The Festival Raffle Tickets have been mailed out to all parishioners that are in our parish database. We encourage you to either buy or sell them to others. You may turn in your payments and ticket stubs at the parish office, or you may drop them, marked Festival in the Sunday collection baskets. If you have not received any tickets and would like a book or two, you can pick them up in the parish office.

Booth Sponsors & Volunteers

The parish festival is in need of booth sponsors. You may become one with a minimum donation of $100.00 or more. If you have a personal business or working with a company who would like to sponsor a booth, for a donation of $400.00, you may post or display your business or company’s name prominently in the booth during the festival.

White Elephant Booth is back!

The SVDP is now collecting knick-knacks, USEABLE small appliances, clothes, bags, shoes, toys for the White Elephant booth for our Festival. If you have anything to donate, please call the Parish Office at 510-471-7766, and leave your name, phone number, and a member of SVDP will call you back for pick up.
