Today's Gospel sees Jesus in the synagogue while proclaiming the words of the Prophet Isaiah.
Using these words, Jesus announces his career. He will help the poor and challenge people to see what's really important in life. He will challenge religious laws and cure diseases that hold people captive. Unfortunately I've met some Catholics and Christians who admire Jesus but think his career is only for people who study theology, teach Confirmation and religious education, say Mass or join religious orders.
That's why young people inspire me. For many, there is a realization that Jesus outlines every Christian's career in this Gospel, not just his own. In any career you'll see poor people who need help. You'll come across people who are blind to Christian values and need your example. And as a United States citizen, you'll be called to vote for politicians who create laws and economic decisions that can bring freedom or captivity to millions.
Prepare now for your career as a disciple...you can't beat the retirement plan!
Stay safe and healthy!
