As I read this Sunday’s Gospel, the words ‘curiosity’ and ‘invitation’ comes to mind. Jesus’ cousin, John’s disciples decided to follow Jesus as he walked by. They asked him where He was staying and Jesus invited them to “come, and you will see”.
I can remember a time when I wanted to be in a dance class that doubled as a workout that I went…ALL THE TIME. I posted on Facebook about it, tried to get others to come with me, you name it, you can tell I was into it. However, that was all on the outside. On the inside, I was scared. A part of me was unsure of what I was so curious about. I liked the feeling of the warm welcome, it made me want to be a part of the group, but I wasn’t really sure what I was going to get into or what it was.
I was encouraged to join, to follow and to just be a part of it. There was no pressure. I was only to be present; to let me learn as I was around people and process and enjoy what I was around. The invitation was grand and I after being around the people, the music, the movement, I found that I loved being in that space. I followed and after a year, ended up certifying to become an instructor. I was a part of U-Jam Fitness at the early stages of the format. We followed a very strong yet gracious leader and also learned from each other.
I want to think this is what being invited to be one of Jesus’ disciples is like; the start of the church at its infancy. Being curious is what helps us grow. Peter was the first disciple of Jesus. He is the rock or foundation of our church. His curiosity led us to where our church is today. For that, I’m blessed.
